Fear Of Public Speaking Phobia – The Lefkoe Method

I remember getting cold and forgetting my entire talk on stage. As I rushed backstage I could hear the auditorium burst into laughter. Since then, each time i have been approached to deliver a speech on any subject I have conveniently rejected the offer.

But with time I realized that there is no point in acting like an escapist. The truth is i was so afraid of making a fool of myself on stage that I kept avoiding such invitations.

I am asked to host an event of close to 400 hundred people. My worry is I never did emceeing before. The even is an oath taking ceremony of Parent Teachers Association in the school where where my kids are currently enrolled at. Please give me advise /comment / tips on how to overcome my fear. Tips On Public Speaking – Using Your Voice To Wow Your Audience!

How you deliver your speech is even more important than the content of your speech. The way you use your voice during a presentation will either grab and keep your audience’s attention or put them to sleep.

It is estimated that when a voice-trained person delivers a speech, the audience retains 83 per cent of the information. In contrast, when an untrained person delivers the same speech the audience will only retain 45 per cent of the information.

An interesting voice will have a varied pitch and variations in pace and volume. A speech which is delivered in a monotonous voice is very dull indeed for the audience.

There are various characteristics that alter a person’s speech, such as clarity, volume, pitch, tone and speed of delivery. Let’s look at those characteristics now.

1. CLARITY.

It is essential that you speak clearly, otherwise your audience will become bored and you will not get your message across. If you are very nervous your mouth can become tense and it becomes more difficult to speak with clarity. It is worth trying to control your nerves as much as possible and to make a conscious effort to pronounce your words very clearly.

If you find that nerves are making you gabble or mumble, then take a deep breath and pause for a second before continuing. Try to avoid filling pauses with ‘uh’, ‘um’, ‘you know’ and so on, as these can be distracting for the audience.

2. VOLUME.

Make sure you speak loudly enough – you must be heard at the back of the room! You can increase the volume of your voice by increasing the pressure of air coming out of your lungs. Speak from the chest, not the throat.

Don’t be afraid to vary the volume of your voice during your speech. Talk more loudly and slightly more quickly during the more exciting parts. Drop your voice and slow down during the important points. This will increase the atmosphere in the room and force the audience to concentrate hard to hear you.

3. PITCH (the highness or lowness of a sound).

Generally people feel more comfortable listening to a deep, smooth voice. However, it is important that your voice sounds natural and not forced. Speak as low as you comfortably can while still sounding natur

al. Try to vary your pitch depending on the content of your speech, this will keep your audience interested. When practising your speech you should try reading out loud and singing to explore the potential of your voice.

It is also a good idea to watch or listen to news programmes and be aware of the pitch of the presenter’s voice. Notice how they change their pitch depending on the content of the story.

4. TONE.

Your body cavities, such as your mouth and chest, will impact the tone of your voice. If you restrict these cavities your voice will sound restricted and quite nasal. To avoid restricting your body cavities you must ensure that your posture is correct. A slumped posture will badly affect the tone of your voice and weaken your overall delivery. Stand tall and straight, holding your head up and your shoulders back.

It is a good idea to record yourself talking or reading aloud. Listen closely to the pitch, tone, clarity and fluency of your voice. Then practice your public speaking using the tips given above!

Want to learn some proven tips on public speaking? Your number one task is preparing for your presentation. Preparation is to public speaking as location is to property. You can never prepare enough for your talking engagement and your home’s location can never be good enough.

Public speaking is the process of speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner with the intention to inform, educate, influence or entertain the listeners. For many people the idea of having to stand in front of people and speak is extremely frightening.

The most important counter measure to overcome this fear, and to be able to confidently present, is to prepare yourself to the maximum of your ability. This is one of the most vital tips on public speaking.

The first point of preparation should focus on obtaining the information and knowledge needed. This refers to the content of your talk. What information do you need to present? How can you ensure that you know far more than your talk will cover to ensure that you are not caught by members of the audience who might end up knowing more than you?

Although having somebody know more than you is not necessarily bad. But it does mean that you have to be extra cautious to be accurate and not allow there to be any question mark as to the validity of the material you are presenting.

It is by virtue of the fact that you have been asked to present, you are perceived to be an expert in this particular topic. You need to be able to substantiate this assumption by the content you offer up. If you slip up on this, your reputation could be damaged quite seriously.

When mapping out your talk into sections and then drilling this content down into relevant slides, you will need to examine each part and ensure that your knowledge base covers these points. It is not enough to know a lot about a section and just hope to be able to wing it for other parts. There are many tips on public speaking, but this one should be remembered and followed at all times.

Your talk will be evaluated on the entire content and how you managed to present the knowledge you have. If you only know some parts about your topic, you will have a problem with being confident when you speak.

You will also find yourself wishing to skip over the sections that you don’t know enough about; and your audience will, in all likelihood, catch on to the fact that you lack knowledge in certain sections.

Better to leave out a section if you are not sure of the content and focus on what you really do know. This could mean that you might need to be more detailed in your talk so that you have more than enough content to present.

It is of course advisable to complete several dry runs of your presentation to feel comfortable with the flow of the talk and to iron out any irregularities. Working through the content by delivering the talk either just to yourself out aloud or to a friend or family member will also provide you with a more accurate idea as to the length of the speech.

It is easy for an audience to get the feel of whether your speech has been thrown together, or whether you have prepared yourself at length. Making sure your content stands up to scrutiny is your first step towards, and one of the most effective tips on, confident public speaking.
